On today, the day of soldiers,
and of all they did for you.
My eyes fill with stars, twinkling white,
my blood courses red and blue.
I think of my grandfather,
the one I never knew.
The wars he fought and blood he lost,
for my mom, for me, for you.
I like to think he's looking out for me,
like he did before my birth
he hadn't even known of me,
the irony would make him shiver with mirth.
My uncle is deaf from all the shells,
that went off near his ears,
I can't imagine my aunt's worry,
but it stained her cheeks with tears.
I wish I could say war never happens,
but I would kid myself
the thoughts of men play out in violence,
and that's why medals line my grandma's shelf.
